Austral Pacific Energy Ltd. is an oil and gas exploration company based in Wellington, New Zealand. Infratil owns 12.5% of Austral Pacific (June 2008). The company is focused exclusively in the Australasian region, which is recognized and categorized as politically stable, and one of the most active exploration areas in the world.
Austral Pacific holds a diverse project portfolio of oil and gas production and exploration permits. Through its subsidiaries, the Company controls interests in many exploration and production concessions in New Zealand. Austral Pacific Energy has significant exploration permits across the Taranaki Eastern Margin.
Austral Pacific's offers immediate focus on the Taranaki Basin provides:
shallow oil and gas potential - the known Miocene reservoirs (which have produced at Kaimiro, Ngatoro, Goldie, Surrey and Cheal) are developed across several of Austral Pacific's permits. These shallow targets are less costly to drill and bring into profitable production in the event of discovery, than deep reservoirs;
deep gas potential - the established Kapuni Sands reservoirs (the producing zones in the Maui, Kapuni, Mangahewa, McKee and Pohokura fields) are present at depth across onshore Taranaki. Drilling targets of substantial size have been identified in several of Austral Pacific's permits and the Cardiff structure is now being tested whilst others are being considered for drilling and testing;
Tariki Sands targets - the reservoir at the Kahili, Tariki and Ahuroa fields may also provide targets within certain Austral Pacific permits;
In the longer term, the Company's acreage in Canterbury offers sizeable oil and gas drilling possibilities.
Austral Pacific Energy is listed on the Canadian TSX (home listing) and it is also listed on the NZX.
